Crescent moon brooches cradling stars were traditional Victorian gifts for a newlywed bride. It was referred to as a “honeymoon brooch”. Crescent moons were gifted at the start of the relationship in the hope that the couple would continue to see the full moon. Adding a star or flower to the crescent was only done for the newlyweds. So this gorgeous brooch was once gifted to an Australian bride just after she had said “I do”. Willis & Sons are an Australian Jewellery institution. Based in Melbourne in the 1850s they established themselves as jewellery importers & wholesalers. Their amazing unicorn maker’s mark is a highly sought after collectors item – & it is not hard to see why. Who wouldn’t want to own a unicorn? The Willis & sons Unicorn hallmark is beautifully crisp & tucked safely beneath the c-clasp & t-bar brooch. The gold is in wonderful condition – given its age – the only thing to note is that the whole brooch is slightly bent (but this is only noticeable when you look at it closely from the side). The pearls are in lovely condition & graduate in size & colour – becoming a greyer colour as they reach the edges from the centre creamiest pearl. This is a magnificent piece of history, both Australian jewellery & in tracing the history of love & courtships.
