Traditionally, the French use large spoons to eat soup. Here we have a set of eight soup spoons & a louche (ladle) for serving the soup from a tureen. They are silver plated, decorated in the Art Nouveau style of voluptuous wreaths on both sides of the handles, & culminating with a flourish where the handles meet the bowls. The punch marks in the bowl are LS separated by a star, the mark used by Leopold Hernstein 1882-1894, & the number 84, indicating the qualityof the silver plate. This set, containing nine pieces, found in a northern France antique market, is in remarkably good condition for its age, & would be a superb wedding or anniversary gift. Length of spoons: 22 cm Length of louche: 31.5 cm Weight of 8 spoons & 1 louche: 970 grams Please note most items sold by ContinentalPlates are antique or vintage & may show evidence of a previous life.
