Description

Antique vintage hand embroidered Rabari woolen shawl with mirrorwork The Rabari of northwest India are a community of nomads who migrated into Kachchh from the Thar Desert. Rabari Clan are expert camel breeders, cattle herders & shepherds. Over time as the community grew too large for the environment to sustain, they divided & a subgroup migrated to a new region. Embroidery is an integral part of Rabari life. Their stitch work combines mirrors of many shapes: squares, triangles, diamonds, rectangles & circles. This unusual play with shaped mirrors is unique to Rabari embroidery. The shawl would be made for bride’s wedding, as part of her dowry, & it took around six months to make one piece. The wool was prepared from coarse goats wool & was tie dyed in eggplant color with Henna & Indigo to create the special pattern. It is then painstakingly embroidered with symbols of her desert life, women carrying water pots, camels etc. The iconography is naïve & rustic but so charming. These shawls are super hard to find as the younger generation have lost the interest as well as skill to make such intricate shawls. It’s impossible for them to put hours labor to make these incredible pieces. It’s a master piece to posses & can be used as a shawl or a wall hanging! Wash Care: Strictly Dry Clean Size: Weight: Composition: Wool with mirrors & hand embroidery As with all vintage textiles, the piece may have some stain marks & minor tears in the fabric owing to natural decay through time & atmospheric elements. The piece may also show some mending work done to salvage it. These irregularities & marks are a stamp of its authenticity & add to its charm.
