Description

Exquisite original 1950s cocktail dress by high-end designer Edith Small, in dove grey lace over white silk satin. The lace is elaborately studded with hundreds of prong-set rhinestones in geometrical shapes following the lines of the lace. I wasn’t able to capture in photographs just how sparkly this dress is in person! It’s also really heavy – the lace is absolutely loaded with rhinestones & the silk satin is heavy & fluid. Edith Small was considered a peer of famous designers Gilbert Adrian & Irene Lentz, & although her work was widely covered in the press during the 1950s, she is not as well known today. Small used high quality fabrics imported from France & Italy – see newspaper article from November 1954 which describes Small’s use of “bejeweled lace” among other luxury fabrics. This dress has no label but I recently sold an identical one with an Edith Small label – I couldn’t believe it when I found another one, especially given that Edith Small pieces aren’t easy to find. You can see the one I have sold, with its labels, in my sold listings. This one is exactly the same except that the measurements are slightly different, & this one comes with its original belt (shown in pics). The dress has short cap sleeves, a deep sweetheart neckline, fitted bodice & sheath skirt with a scalloped hem. It closes at the back with a long metal zipper & two sets of hooks & eyes. The grey colour of the lace is a bit darker in person than shown in my pics. This dress is in excellent condition. There are two or three single-thread breaks in the lace (if you zoom in on the pics you can see that the lace connects with very fine strands & it’s only a couple of these that have broken). On the inside of the dress, there are perspiration stains in both underarms but they don’t show at all from the outside. Under the waist seam, there is a very tiny, light mark about 2mm across – shown in the last pic. It’s really hard to notice the mark in person. I estimate that this dress will best fit a modern Small, but please check measurements below to ensure a good fit.
